Kharun

The Kharun are a reptilian humanoid species originating from the harsh world of Kharon. Their physical appearance frequently causes others to assume that the Kharun are an aggressive or militaristic species. They are heavily built, possess thick scaled skin, powerful jaws, prominent brow ridges, and predatory eyes. Their voices tend to be deep and resonant, and their natural body language can appear threatening to other species. This initial impression is misleading.

The Kharun are a deeply spiritual civilization whose history has been defined by survival, endurance, and remembrance. Their culture places enormous value upon strength, but strength is not synonymous with violence. To the Kharun, true strength is the ability to endure hardship without becoming cruel, to protect those who cannot protect themselves, and to preserve the lessons of previous generations.

Their civilization has repeatedly come close to destruction. Each time, they rebuilt. That history has produced a people who are cautious toward outsiders but extraordinarily loyal once trust has been established.

Kharun are unmistakably reptilian. Their bodies possess a humanoid configuration, with two arms and two legs, but their evolutionary heritage is immediately apparent. Their appearance varies considerably between clans and geographic populations. Some individuals possess subtle variations in scale coloration across their faces, shoulders, and forearms. These variations are natural pigmentation rather than tattoos.

Kharun scales are not uniform across the body. Different regions possess different scale structures. The chest and abdomen are covered in smaller, flexible scales. The shoulders, back, outer arms, and legs contain larger and more durable scales. The back of the neck is particularly heavily armored. This arrangement provides natural protection while retaining flexibility. Older Kharun frequently develop subtle variations in scale coloration and texture.

The Kharun occupy an unusual evolutionary position. Although clearly reptilian in appearance and ancestry, they possess a highly developed internal temperature-regulation system. They are not true ectotherms. Their metabolism can adjust according to environmental temperature, allowing them to function in environments that would be uncomfortable or dangerous to many terrestrial reptiles. However, temperature still affects their metabolism. Warm environments increase their energy and alertness while cold environments slow their reflexes and metabolism. Kharun possess highly efficient lungs capable of extracting oxygen from relatively thin atmospheres. Their respiratory system evolved partly in response to Kharon's high mountain regions. They can function at elevations that would leave Humans suffering from hypoxia. Their lungs also contain specialized filtering structures that remove dust and particulate matter. This makes Kharun unusually resistant to respiratory problems caused by Kharon's frequent dust storms.
